When I first experienced career burnout just four years into running my first business Shows 4 Kids, part of the problem was I had forgotten to revisit my purpose, values and goals. Purpose is such a heavy-hitting word and people often approach it with a lot of apprehension, curiosity or confusion. So many of us wonder ‘What is my purpose?’ or ‘How can I find my purpose?’
I don't have the answers to those two questions for you. However, I do have some thoughts and ideas on how you can find the answers for yourself. I also believe our purpose and values are not static and can evolve as we continue to grow and develop.
The power of purpose
When I think back to my younger self, my purpose behind wanting to become a famous actress was to be able to connect with and entertain people through my performances. When I started Shows 4 Kids in my 20s, my purpose was to entertain and educate children on some really important lessons, such as cyber bullying and healthy eating and exercise. This aligned with my values at the time; however, I don't think I was passionate about this purpose. It didn't drive me or fuel fire within me to do whatever it takes to live out this purpose. I wasn't aware at the time of any of this, of course; I was in my mid-20s and had not done any personal development work to understand my purpose and my values.
