The Trimodal project created a lot of new information and required some relatively subtle concepts to be explained, so two quite lengthy articles in Electronics World were needed.
I must confess I have not yet got around to implementing the idea of the Adaptive Trimodal Amplifier, which would switch from Class-A to Class-B if the heatsink got too hot. It should be a straightforward bit of electronics using a temperature sensor, very possibly the LM35, and a latching comparator. A different approach would be to control the mode on the basis of the ambient temperature, so Class-A would supplement the central heating in winter, ...
