As chapter 1 explains, blockchain technology is the mother of SSI, pure and simple. The twin pillars of blockchain are Bitcoin and Ethereum, and while both communities have been active in SSI, Ethereum has been a particular hotbed due to the power and flexibility of smart contracts. Leading the charge has been Fabian Vogelsteller, who joined the Ethereum Foundation in July 2015 and has built some of its core applications, including the Ethereum Wallet and the Mist browser.
