14.4 Leaching with Variable Flow Rates

Leaching, also known as solid-liquid extraction (SLE), and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) have very different hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics. However, equilibrium staged analysis is almost identical for the two processes because it is not affected by these differences. In this section we will briefly consider the analysis of leaching systems using triangular diagrams (Coulson et al., 1978). In leaching the flow rates will generally not be constant. The variation in flow rates can be included by doing the analysis on a triangular diagram.
