Tubular and hollow-fiber membrane systems can be operated in co-current flow (Figure 17-18B). Binary gas permeation with co-current flow can be analyzed with a staged model similar to that used for cross-flow except now y_{p} *≠* y_{t}, and the flow pattern must be used to relate the permeate mole frac to the mole frac transferring through the membrane. The co-current model is shown in Figure 17-19B. This model again represents a numerical integration of the differential equations. Coker et al. (1998) present a solution method for multicomponent permeation when the membrane area is known but the cut is unknown, and show that N = 100 is usually sufficient.
