Lack of Skill

Unlike lack of will, lack of skill or ability is fixable by a strong leader in the middle. But while it is fixable, it's one of the tougher issues for leaders in the middle to understand and commit to solving because of how leadership has been done in corporate America for so long. Here the coach down mindset is essential because while anyone can choose to have the will, leaders in the middle choose to develop the skills. If you're managing your team or protecting them, you're not addressing the lack of skill and the knowledge gap by developing the team and demanding results.
