Denial-of-Service Attacks

A denial-of-service (DoS) attack allows an attacker to overwhelm a traditional web application with malformed network traffic, intentionally slow clients, or lots and lots of requests. With just a basic understanding of how an app works, an attacker could create much more work for the app than it can handle, bringing one or more application tiers to a crashing halt and preventing any users from using the app. This attack can be performed at the TCP packet layer, at the HTTP protocol layer, or at the application request layer. No matter what layer is being attacked, asymmetry between the work required to create a request and the work required to handle it makes a DoS attack feasible and effective.
