Here we are considering commonplace units – i.e. those involving Videocrypt and D2-MAC – which are not covered elsewhere. Naturally the UK reader will be far more interested in Videocrypt than MAC, conversely D2-MAC will be of more interest to the Scandinavian reader. In the UK, D2-MAC is not in widespread use as it is in much of Scandinavia but there is a healthy market among those who view services not intended for the UK by using so-called ‘pirate’ smart cards. Similarly there is a band of viewers who utilise the same type of device to view Videocrypt encrypted programmes such as those from BSkyB without having to pay for them.
