HIGH SCORER

Born in London, England, in 1920, Rosalind Franklin was the second of five children. A bright child who loved math and solved equations for fun, Rosalind was athletic as well. She played cricket and field hockey in school, although her music instructor, the composer Gustav Holst, wrote to her parents that she was not skilled in that particular area of study.

ROCKS FULL OF HOLES

In college, Rosalind studied chemistry, French, and German. After graduating, she studied the porous properties of coal, which was important in the development of charcoal filters for gas masks used during World War II. She received her PhD from Cambridge for this work.
