You will want to know something about handling equipment. Of course, you're a DP, and DPs don't have to put up lights or set flags; that's why you have a crew. But there are some good reasons for knowing this equipment and being able to use it.

First of all, if you know how the equipment works, and now and then show that you can use it, you will gain the respect of your crew. They will always be happy to know that you're not afraid to get your hands dirty—you don't think you're “above” them or too good to do the kind of work they do.
