In this chapter we review 802.11 from the point of view of network architecture, medium access control (MAC) and the physical layer (PHY). Evolution of the physical layer is described from the early infra-red, frequency hopping and direct sequence spread spectrum links with throughputs of several megabits per second up to the techniques that support hundredfold increases in data rates through advanced modulation based on OFDM, multiple element antenna arrays (MIMO) and multiplication of bandwidth on 5 GHz and millimeter wave bands.
