When I started driving as a bullish seventeen-year-old, my first long-awaited lessons were, let's say, tricky. I wasn't a great learner driver. On finally getting behind the wheel of my learner car, I froze. I took lessons during lunch breaks from my first office job, only to return to my desk after every fraught hour with the back of my shirt drenched in sweat and my instructor probably regretting his career choice. He was hard-nosed and experienced, with a good reputation and strong pass-rate record, and on just my second lesson and in a fit of frustration he declared that I had ‘Central Periphery Tension’.
