Pierre Simon Laplace (1749–1827) was a French astronomer and mathematician whose work was important to the development of mathematical astronomy and statistics. He also put the theory of mathematical probability on a sound footing. He first discovered Laplace's equation and Laplace transform, to be discussed in this chapter. To Laplace, the universe is nothing but a giant problem in calculus.
