Progress indicators with known process duration

There are two possible UX patterns when we are dealing with progress indicators. In some cases the duration of the specific process cannot be calculated or resolved, and still we might want to consider showing the progress indicator. In most cases, however, we do have certain information and knowledge regarding the process' duration and progress.

Silverlight, as well as WPF, does support both of these situations through a control called ProgressBar. This recipe describes situations where the process duration is known or can be calculated programmatically.
