I have written this book because I like writing, and because I thought it worthwhile to try to express in plainish words what has often been rendered mysterious, dull, and inaccessible by jargon and spin. I have the luck of having had a career in which I have been on both sides of the fence, poacher and gamekeeper: an investment manager for nearly thirty years, but for ten years also in the business of seeing, evaluating and appointing other managers. As this experience is at the root of the book, I should say something about it.
