If you’ve ever drawn something in perspective that ended up looking unnaturally distorted, you’re not alone. This happens when you draw outside of the viewer’s field of vision. In this chapter, we’ll discuss the limitations of human sight and introduce the cone of vision – the tool that creates the necessary boundaries that tell us what the viewer is able to see.

Human vision has specific limitations. When we look out toward the horizon, the depth of our vision ends, somewhere in the distance. It’s not as apparent, but we have limitations of height and width as well – if I stretch my arms out on each side and look straight ahead, I can’t see them.
