7.1 Chapter Organization
In this chapter, we present several future directions with potential significant breakthroughs in the young field of phase-aware signal processing. A brief review of the renaissance of phase-aware processing with its decline in the past and the renewed interest in recent years is provided. We point out the series of relevant events involving phase-aware signal processing which reflect the renewed interest of researchers in the field of speech communication and eventually motivated the writing of this book. A range of applications where phase processing may successfully be incorporated in the future is presented. In particular, we describe potential applications within two categories: (i) connected research disciplines and the possible extension of the techniques and concepts learned in this book for single-channel phase-aware processing to multi-channel or other speech processing applications not fully covered here; and (ii) neighboring signal processing domains that involve signals other than speech (e.g., image, video, and biomedical signals) which could benefit from the phase-aware speech processing knowledge learned from this book.
7.2 Renaissance of Phase-Aware Signal Processing: Decline and Rise
It took researchers almost a century to start reinvestigating the misconception about the belief that the human ear is phase-deaf1 and to pose questions ...
