Importance of Measurement
Measurement ‘converts’ existing information of unknown magnitude into a usable value. It helps us take decisions. For example, when doctors measure the blood pressure of a patient, they often want to decide on the medication or the line of treatment based on that. During a cricket match, when the umpire decides whether the batsman is out or not out, his decision affects the outcome of the match. In a manufacturing unit, when a manufactured machine part is inspected, a decision is taken about whether to accept or reject that machine part. Such decisions involve risks of error in measurement.
