The Need for DFSS
The D-M-A-I-C roadmap was designed to detect problems in any existing, stable manufacturing process, service process or product design function. It requires a measurement system, statistical analysis tools, the ability to define a mean adjustment factor to put the response back on target and a control plan to audit the response performance against statistical control limits. This approach is primarily based on the application of statistical process control, quality tools and process capability analysis; it is not a design methodology. This DMAIC roadmap is, therefore, not appropriate for a new product design and development process; nor does it adequately address any improvement in terms of reliability. ...
