METHODOLOGY

Apart from growing up in a small town and living in communities that seemed small most of my life, the research that led to this book began in earnest in 1996. As part of a project on civic involvement, my research team and I conducted 250 qualitative interviews in 18 states with community leaders and ordinary residents, about a third of whom lived in small towns, and the remainder of whom resided in cities or suburbs. In 1997, we also conducted a representative national survey among 1,528 randomly selected respondents.
