Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT), a transformative technology that is reshaping our interaction with the world. It covers essential aspects of IoT, including its physical network architecture, characteristics, enabling technologies, challenges, and system levels. The chapter also delves into sensor technology, sensor interfacing techniques, and various types of networks employed in IoT deployments. Communication protocols relevant to IoT and their applications in agriculture are discussed as well. The introduction highlights the fundamental attributes of IoT, such as its capability to connect physical objects to the Internet, reliance on sensors and data collection devices, and utilization of data analytics for informed decision-making. Furthermore, the chapter explores the integral components of an IoT system, encompassing sensors, gateways, cloud servers, and user interfaces.
