Although we’ve mentioned variables several times in this chapter, we haven’t yet considered them closely. In this section, we examine variables in the context of Integration Services. Like any other software development platform, Integration Services supports variables as a mechanism for storing and sharing information. For developers coming from a traditional programming language such as Microsoft Visual Basic or Visual C#, or for those who are experienced with database programming in a language such as Transact-SQL, variables in SSIS might seem a little strange, mostly because of the differences in the SSIS platform itself. To declare variables in SSIS, you use the Variables window found in the visual designers.
