Chapter 10. Smart Card System Management

As we have discussed throughout this book, a smart card can be a valuable addition to a variety of applications, many based in wide area computer systems and networks. A smart card is an excellent security token for large-scale security infrastructures. Its ability to store information in a tamper-resistant and tamper-evident package and to provide secure computation on the same platform makes it an excellent facility to store cryptographic keys through which the identity of the cardholder can be authenticated. Further, a wide variety of personal information about the cardholder can be stored on the card and carried on his or her person.
