A smart card is a tiny outpost on the frontier of an IT network. It provides a secure place to store information and a secure platform for performing a modest amount of processing. It is able to sense and record what happens out there and communicate in a secure manner back to other nodes of the network. And, on its own, it can enable or disable functionality at its point of use based on policies installed by its issuer.
