14.1 Introduction

The world is witnessing rapid urbanization, hitherto unseen. Latest UN report [1] says that currently, more than 50/ the world population lives in cities, and this figure is expected to grow up to 70/ population growth, cities have embraced advanced information and communication technology (ICT)-based solutions to provide smart services to their citizens. This gives rise to the concept of “smart cities” where networked sensors and actuators deployed pan city allow real-time monitoring of the urban environment and also enable timely reaction to events through central control system with minimal or no human intervention.
