Formative and Summative Evaluation

A multiple-choice or other written test only assesses short-term knowledge comprehension. If learners need to demonstrate their ability, they can prove it by posting photos or a video of themselves performing. In the “23 Things” course, for example, learners are asked to explore a new technology, then demonstrate their own use of it. Learners in a safety course might be asked to have someone video their use of proper footing when mounting a forklift, those in food service might be asked to upload a photo of a finished wedding cake, or managers could provide a sample of a memo praising recent good sales figures.
