Taxes and Social Security

Social Security benefits were not taxed by the federal government from 1938 until after the Social Security Act was amended in 1983. Beginning in 1984, part of Social Security benefits became subject to federal income taxes. Additional changes were made to Social Security taxation in 1993 as part of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.
