3 What Are Social Media and Web 2.0?

A quick web search will yield dozens of definitions for the terms social media and Web 2.0. These were discussed earlier, but it’s helpful to have additional context on how these tools and technologies can be best used in a corporate communications environment.

There is plenty of debate over the precise meaning of the term Web 2.0. Even Tim O’Reilly, generally acknowledged as the originator of the term, gives it a dual definition:

“Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.”
