14Binders for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

14.1 Introduction

Binder is one of the important parts of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) (Figure 14.1), which has played vital roles on improving the electrochemical performances of SIBs. Its main functions are listed as follows [1, 2]:

  1. (1) To enhance the contact between the active materials, the conductive agents, and the current collector to form a stable electrode structure;
  2. (2) To stabilize the surface of the electrodes, inhibit the volume change caused by sodium ion insertion/extraction in/from active materials, maintain the mechanical integrity of the electrodes, and improve the cycle stability of the batteries;
