Labels

Labels are used to implement the mandatory access control mechanism described previously. They are securely stored as extended attributes of a file (along with other internal information) and are extensively relied upon by Trusted Solaris 8 to provide more security than that afforded by mandatory access control. Labels may be compared with military classification of information into Unclassified, Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret categories. Depending on the sensitivity and importance of a particular piece of data or resource, they are assigned an appropriate classification (label), which is used later to enforce the security policy.
