Name Services

Name services play an important role in network security. Because many security-related decisions (such as permitting or denying access, deciding on the available services, and so on) depend on information obtained via name services, enough attention should be given to the secure configuration of name services. As noted in Chapter 3,“System Security,” the original Network Information Service (NIS) should not be used due to its poor security. Excluding NIS leaves you with two name services that ship with Solaris 8—the Domain Name System (DNS) and Network Information Service Plus (NIS+).
