A Brief History of Kerberos

Since its inception at MIT in the ’80s, Kerberos has had an interesting life with five major revisions (and, correspondingly, five releases of Kerberos protocol and software). The current release is Kerberos Version 5 (or V5 for short). Version 4 is also in use, but it is being gradually phased out by Kerberos 5 where Kerberos 5 is available. Among the first users of the Kerberos system were International Business Machines (IBM), Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC, now part of Compaq), and Sun Microsystems.
