Folate deficiency is a lack of folic acid in the diet and the symptoms
are usually subtle, and folate deficiency anemia is the medical term
given for the condition (Huether and McCance, 2004). When folate
deficiency anemia is likely to occur, there are some specific symp-
toms such as loss of appetite and weight loss. Folate deficiency can
also cause weakness, sore tongue, headaches, heart palpitations, irri-
tability, and often behavioral disorders (Haslam and Probert, 1998).
Pregnant women with folate deficiency are more likely to give birth to
low birth weight and premature infants, and infants with neural tube
