The advent of the cropped sensor did more for the telephoto side of the equation than any other category. The old standard 70–200mm lens now has the effective range of a 105–300mm lens. That makes a real difference when it comes to isolating your subject in the frame, which is exactly what we do when we concentrate on a subject: our mind zooms in on it. That sounds strange, but new photographers are often frustrated by their camera’s inability to reach into a scene and isolate a subject like their mind can.
