Challenges for the state – an overview

Pakistan is going through tumultuous times. The process of Talibanization is eroding the already weakened state institutions, the economy continues to be in a precarious state, and the menaces of regionalism and sectarianism have grown further in recent times. Since the February 2008 elections, the regional aspirations of various ethnic groups, namely the Punjabis, Pakhtoons, Baloch, Sindhis, Mohajirs and Seraikis, and their efforts to assert their sub-national identities have started resurfacing.
