In many circumstances, SpamAssassin can be upgraded seamlessly. When system administrators or users have made customizations, there may be minor issues. The rules used by SpamAssassin change with each release, and a user may have entered customized scores for rules that are no longer in the latest release. SpamAssassin will continue to work, but the
spamassassin --lint command will list errors.
When SpamAssassin is upgraded, the system administrator should run the
spamassassin --lint command. This should be done for the main account(s) that are used to filter spam.
# su spam $ spamassassin --lint
