Appendix: our research

The purpose of our research is to make a positive difference to how people speak up and are heard at work. The methods we choose aim at engaging with the world of work as it is, deeply, rigorously and pragmatically, from multiple perspectives.

We approached the research that this book is based on with the following assumptions:

  • Truth and power in the workplace are not objective and cannot be reduced to single, all-encompassing definitions. They are, to us, ‘social constructs’1 that exist within a specific context, a specific network of relationships and the unique qualities of a specific workplace. They are intimately bound up with each other.
