One of the largest problems facing those who maintain large documents is maintaining the
integrity of references. For example, the title of Chapter 3 in an annual report might be
“Evaluating Business Practices.” When you refer to Chapter 3 in other parts of the docu-
ment, you might be tempted to type that text. But if you later change the title of Chapter 3,
you’ll have to search through your document and change every reference. For a long, com-
plex document that undergoes many changes, keeping cross-references synchronized manu-
