What Is Exchange Server?

In 1996, Microsoft introduced Exchange Server, a product that could be used for corporate messaging and collaboration. Since that time, Exchange has gone through several revisions. The three versions currently commonly installed today are Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, and Exchange Server 2003 (formerly codenamed Titanium). Exchange 5.5 required Windows NT 4.0 to run. Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 require Windows 2000 and Active Directory or Windows Server 2003. Many corporations still haven't upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 due to the requirement to move to Active Directory and Windows 2000 Server.
