Appendix F. Glossary
- /etc/inittab
A file that controls the behavior of the init process. The init process refers to the /etc/inittab file and it starts, stops, respawns, and modifies the processes based on that.
- /etc/nsswitch.files
A configuration file that specifies local /etc files as the only source of information for the machine.
- /etc/nsswitch.ldap
A configuration file that specifies the LDAP directory as the primary source of information for the machine.
- /etc/nsswitch.nis
A configuration file that is almost identical to the NIS+ configuration file, except that it specifies NIS maps as the namespace in place of NIS+ tables.
- /etc/nsswitch.nisplus
A file that specifies NIS+ as the primary source for all information.
