An Overview of File Systems

The file system is one of the basic building blocks of an operating system. The structure and the features of the file system make Unix a powerful and stable operating system (OS).

A file system can be a structure of directories used to organize and store files. It can also be a logical grouping of files and directories in a partition. The term “file system” is used in various contexts. Some of these contexts are described in the following list.

  • A particular type of file system, such as disk-based, network-based, virtual, and so forth.

  • The data structure of a disk slice or other media storage device.
