Getting Started with NIS+

Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), like NIS, is a naming service that enables you to store information, such as machine names, the address of each machine in a network, user information, security information, and information about the available network services. Though both NIS and NIS+ are naming services, which helps you centrally administer network resources, NIS+ was specifically designed to replace NIS. When NIS was designed, it was intended to cater to small client-server computing networks. Later, as the number and requirements of clients and servers in distributed networks increased, many new issues cropped up. NIS+ was designed to address these issues.
