Securing Your OpenBoot PROM (OBP)
Let us first examine what happens when you boot a SPARC workstation or a server. After the machine is turned on, or after a reset, the system firmware (in PROM) executes the power-on self test (POST). When these tests have completed successfully, the non-volatile storage (EEPROM) is checked to determine whether the auto-boot flag is set to True. If the auto-boot flag is not set to True, the system drops to firmware or the ok prompt. If the auto-boot flag is set to be True, then the OS starts loading from the specified device, such as disk, Internet or CD-ROM.
