Figure 22.1. There’s no reason to wait for the sun to set in order to make the background disappear into darkness. You can dim the ambient light with the shutter and use Speedlites creatively.
The Short Version
The shutter is the gateway to controlling the amount of ambient light in a photograph. If you want more, use a slower shutter speed. If you want less, use a faster shutter speed.
