All over the world, tennis is known as the sport of kings. Originally played in France, it is documented as having begun early in the thirteenth century in French monasteries as jeu de paume, game of the palm. Many believe that the name tennis derived from tenez, the old French word for play. As kings from various countries became involved in the sport, it gained a reputation for being an elite game which only royalty could play. The word real, meaning “royal,” was integrated into the name of the sport which came to be known as real tennis in England.
