The studies within this approach bring forward a third fundamental issue that constitutes intercultural communication research, namely the question of how speakers and hearers cope with linguistic norms and how the maintenance of these norms determines mutual understanding. Interestingly the studies within this approach illustrate a historical development away from error analysis towards creativity and locality in the handling of norms in achieving intercultural understanding (Hülmbauer 2014).
