How it works...

When using SSMS to execute packages, the Execute Package wizard queries the SSISDB Catalog to access the package properties, and the properties of the associated environments, which allows you to configure the execution. When you start the execution, SSMS invokes the stored procedures used to create, configure, and start the execution of a package, as explained earlier.

In brief: SSMS uses Transact-SQL to execute SSIS packages deployed to the SSISDB Catalog; this is explained in more detail in the following recipe.
