Open Library Communities, Users, and Usage

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the local communities where open libraries have been established. In Europe, the first staff-less libraries were, primarily, placed in rural villages and small towns or in suburban neighborhoods dominated by detached or townhouses. Soon after, however, the staff-less public library model spread to more urban environments. Today, open libraries in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are found in urban as well as in rural areas. In Far East Asia, on the contrary, the first open libraries were found in urban environments.
