When we refer to luminaires we are discussing the actual lighting fixtures. We also refer to luminaires as lighting units, instruments, and lamps. While all of these names are technically correct, you may find one used more commonly throughout different regions of the world or in various specialty areas of lighting. For instance, luminaires with a permanent mounting like those used in architectural practices are frequently called fixtures. In entertainment lighting we often prefer to use “lighting instruments” or “units.”
