This chapter introduces specialties that employ lighting professionals outside of the entertainment lighting industry, although elements of entertainment design may still be present in some of these applications (e.g., themed design). Many of the specialties have been around for less than 50 years and have typically been designed by individuals whose backgrounds are quite different from that of entertainment lighting designers. This is due to these designs often being based on more of an engineering perspective than theatrical design.
